Human Flag @ Cal Expo, Sacramento, CA photograph by Ron Middlekauff--- September 29, 2001
After the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, all aircraft were grounded. The first day TV News Helicopters were allowed to fly was September 29, 2001. That was the day a "Human Flag" was formed at the state fairgrounds at Cal Expo, here in Sacramento. Participants were given a red, white or blue T-Shirt and told where to stand. I was photographing it "live" on TV, and had taken my personal camera with me because my wife Lisa and son Hunter were down in the crowd to participate. I simply wanted to snap a photo to show them what it looked like from above.
The next morning, I had brought in an 8x10 photo to show my co-workers. It was casually held up on TV by one of the news anchors and then my phone started ringing...
KFBK Radio had planned for a photograph of the event to be made into a poster for charity. They used their traffic airplane and a photographer to capture the moment. None of them turned out! Suddenly, they wanted my photo and needed it to go to the printer right away! Not being legally savvy, I drew up my own contract and all parties signed off on it. I wanted ---zero--- profit to be made on this by anyone. All proceeds went to the NY Police & Firefighters' Widows & Orphans Fund. All I wanted in return was a photo credit... and I got it. Thousands of posters were sold... with my byline on every copy. Sure glad I had my own camera with me!
